BIO/ARTIST STATEMENT

Sarah K.Skogland (b. 1978, Trondheim, Norway) is a multidiciplinary artist working with painting, sculpture, ceramics, video and found objects.Drawing on thirty years as a dancer, she brings a physical and intuitive approach to making, allowing movements to guide the creation of her work. She works with materials such as pantyhose, deconstructed shoes, and ceramic fragements of body parts, forming pieces that reflect the tensions held within the body and the traces left by lived experience. Her practice brings together objects, gestures, and surfaces to reveal what is carried, what is altered, and what persists.
Her work has been shown in group exhibitions in Los Angeles and New York City.
She currently lives and works in Los Angeles

I work with found objects, soft sculpture, ceramics, painting and video. At the core of my practice is an intrest in the human experience-the tension between the restrictive and the expansive.

My work has evolved from a thirty-year life as a dancer, where movement was both my language and landscape. This physical history expanded into large-scale abstract oil and acrylic paintings. These paintings eventually led me to use my own body as a mark-maker,recording movements in real time across the canvas.I am drawn to discovering new ways to capture motion, memory, and the fragements of experience held within the body. The body becomes a symbol of confinement and freedom, identity and erasure, memory and transformation
In my latest body of work,I use pantyhose and soft sculpture as a kind of second skin-a covering that hides the unwanted, and the unresolved, the parts we protect and hide.I create sculptures from deconstructed shoes and ceramic body parts embedded with nails, and I continue to develop large-scale trace paintings that act as traces of movement and memory.
Trough these works,I explore the spaces where pain, resillience, and transformation coexist.
