BIO/ARTIST STATEMENT

Sarah K. Skogland (b. 1978, Trondheim, Norway) is an interdisciplinary artist based in Los Angeles. With over 30 years of experience as a dancer, her background in movement continues to inform her studio practice and approach to form. Her work includes large-scale paintings, trace based work, soft sculpture, ceramics, installation and performance.
Her work has been shown in group exhibitions in NYC and Los Angeles.

My relationship to the body, both in the world and internally, is central. Vulnerability becomes a point of connection and is at the core of my practice. As a former dancer, my body was my primary language. That history still drives the work. Movement, repetition, and physical exhaustion are not separate from the process. They are the process.

In my soft sculptures and installations, I’m drawn to repurposed fabrics and found materials because they already hold a history of the human mark. They carry the weight of lived experience, of the body, of use, of something emotionally real. I’m interested in that residue and how it can be felt.

Pantyhose is another material I use to create forms that reference the female body. Sometimes it contains bound and intertwined fabrics and fill, while in other works it is stretched, folded, or allowed to take its own shape. Pantyhose acts like a second layer of skin: something that can protect and conceal, but also compress and expose. Having worn them throughout my former profession, I associate them with the contradiction between covering the body and putting it on display. The sculptures allow me to explore that tension through containment, exposure, sexualization, and my own complicated relationship to my body.

I use these forms together to create larger installations, allowing the work to expand beyond the single object and into the surrounding space so the work can be immersive yet intimate, and the viewer isn’t just looking but is physically inside the work.

The video and performance pieces connect with these same ideas, allowing the body and the sculptures to exist in relation to one another
